Les parents de Jérôme décèdent dans un accident de la route ; le jeune homme, sportif de haut niveau en saut à la perche, en ressort handicapé à vie. Il se retrouve seul, sans espérance.
Du moins c’est ce qu’il croît. Ses grands parents vont s’acharner à son rétablissement grâce aux pouvoirs de leurs arts : la musique traditionnelle et la lutherie de la vielle à roue.
Les qualités d’artiste de Jérôme se révèlent et chacun va se surpasser pour reconstruire dans un projet commun, une famille en perdition.
La rencontre de deux générations éloignées où la tendresse, l’abnégation, la reconnaissance occupent une place privilégiée.
La vielle à roue est au cœur de l’histoire avec ses envies et ses capacités à jouer avec la modernité, sans se départir de ses attaches avec la tradition.
En arrière plan le bal folk emporte les corps dans la déraison.
La compilation à partir d’œuvres d’artistes en vogue vient renforcer l’histoire.

J’ai quand même l’inquiétude d’avoir chargé mon roman de considérations techniques relatives à la lutherie. Mais ce n’est pas un handicap. Elles sont comme cerises dans l’arbre, clairsemées, pétillantes, repérables. Pour les mettre en vie, j’ai du créer un contexte et c’est bien l’homme qui porte l’histoire.
Ce sera le bal pour certains, l’atelier pour d’autres, et toujours la main de la caresse et celle tout aussi merveilleuse s’exprimant dans le travail du bois comme dans l’art de la musique. Avec cette musique réelle, celle du CD, guidant vers mon objectif, on va finir par admettre que la forme littéraire utilisée, celle du roman, est pertinente, comme est juste la plupart du discours. Par cette presque fiction teintée de gravité pour l’auteur que je suis, de suspicion pour le lecteur car je vais le balader sur des sentiers inhabituels, on finira par percevoir mon message, par accueillir mon enseignement.
Chacun dira : « Le bijou dans l’écrin, la vedette du spectacle c’est la vielle à roue. Qui aurait parié, en ces temps modernes sur le crin-crin de la vielle à roue ? Depuis qu’elle a pris des cours de chant, elle éclabousse de sa lumière » Oui, c’est un combat qu’elle a livré pour obtenir le droit de scène. Pour elle, une alternative : le vestige ou le vertige. Grâce à l’électro-acoustique, non seulement elle a évité le placard, le musée, mais elle a fortifié son état de départ, celui de la vielle acoustique, car les problèmes ont été reformulés.
Qu’il est difficile d’insérer de la technique dans un cadre littéraire. En tant qu’écrivain, je me suis trouvé dans la même position que la vielle confrontée au milieu établi, ne jurant que par les instruments du quatuor. J’ai du écrire mon histoire avec un ciseau à bois, de la physique instrumentale, de la technologie et avec cela faire rêver, instruire le lecteur, ouvrir des pistes de réflexion sur cet instrument que je vénère et sauvegarder tout un savoir. Seul le livre est capable d’une telle performance. Voilà pourquoi l’écriture m’intéresse. En plus je suis très attaché à l’idée que l’homme dans les activités manuelles peut se montrer brillant, autant que le littéraire avec le verbe. Les cathédrales ont été érigées par le dessin fait de lignes, le tranchant du burin et le courage du corps. On est véritablement dans l’opératif et non dans le philosophique. Les mots prennent une autre résonance en un tel lieu matériel. De temps en temps il est bon de le rappeler. Et de cet empilement de pierres peut jaillir la parole divine.
Celui qui sait tenir l’outil, repérer l’odeur de l’acier pendant la coupe ou celle de la pierre lorsqu’elle se divise se reconnaîtra dans mon roman ; de même celui qui laisse passer une « tourne » avant de partir dans la danse ou de repérer et d’acquiescer au jeu discret de la contrebasse car nous avons des points communs dans notre regard sur les choses. Quant aux autres je dirai : « Il suffit d’entrer pour apprécier le chant de la Cathédrale » MP
Une telle conception n’a rien de difficile. C’est immédiat, sans préparation.
